ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY
Hearts Over Habits, Inc. is an innovative youth development program that was established by Dr. Sharla Walker in 2019. The organization was developed as a response to the disjointed access to support that is experienced by foster youth seen by Dr. Walker in her practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Walker established a small team of community leaders who believed in the vision to provide equal access to opportunities a success to those who have been marginalized and disenfranchised. The organization birthed Hearts Over Habits Life Academy and online community and learning center to provide access to evidenced based skills training to young women ages 14-24.
The online delivery was unique and intentional to provide continuity and access to community and support no matter where circumstances may take clients. Hearts Over Habits, Inc. received the National Mentor Resource Center Technical Assistance Grant to develop evidence-based e-mentoring protocols.
As the organization has continued to grow and develop, the programs and services provided have been established based on the core value system that Hearts Over Habits, Inc. LEADS:
-
Leverages Strengths and Overcomes Challenges
-
Educates
-
Accountability
-

Although the organization has started as a small grassroots organization in the Tampa, FL area, Dr. Walker is committed to expanding the framework of the program to other areas across the nation. The vision of the organization is to have a nation of young women who have been provided the tools to successfully overcome unfavorable circumstances and become leaders within their communities. These young women will positively impact their communities at large because of the work they completed addressing heart issues such as self-awareness, self-confidence, communication, and relational skills.
